Pray for Colorado

The sign welcoming you to Colorado Springs on southbound I-25 on Tuesday evening

The Chapel on the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. (Note: a portion of the AFA is under evacuation, but I don't believe the campus has been touched by the fire)

At one point, our Garden of the Gods Park was severely threatened on Tuesday evening, during the firestorm.  Thankfully, it was untouched.

Our community has come together in more ways than I ever thought possible...
it's the silver lining to this disaster.
Continue to pray for Colorado to get moisture and for this nightmare we are experiencing to end.
Thank you!

I will get back to posting artwork soon...

An emotional week...Waldo Canyon Fire

It all began on Saturday, June 23rd...I sit enjoying a good book on my deck, look up after a break in the chapters, and see this:
Oh no, not another fire in Colorado...our drought conditions, triple digit temps and winds make for perfect conditions...unfortunately!  Colorado, at this time, had 8 major fires burning, this fire was #9.  It was named the Waldo Canyon Fire, and soon would become the most destructive fire in Colorado history! Mandatory evacuations were set in place for areas along the fire line.

By Monday, it looked like this:

and winds picked up, and even more evacuations were made

On Tuesday, I had a different aspect of the fire from the south end of Colorado Springs, however, I had no idea what I was in for.  On my commute home, I experienced something I have never experienced before, and hope I never do again.
Here's how my commute started out, I didn't realize what I was looking at.  Later, I learned, this is called a pyrocumulonimbus cloud...the combination of fire and smoke with features similar to a severe thunderstorm.

Here's what I encountered during the rush hour (the following pictures were taken while traffic was stopped...safety first!).  It was like driving into a severe thunderstorm, but this is smoke!  It looked like it was snowing, and it was...snowing ashes!
This picture, looking west towards the fire:
The sun glowing behind all the smoke, near Garden of the Gods exit from I-25:
You can't even imagine the air quality on my (80 minute) commute home...with air conditioning in my car on recirculate, my eyes burning, my throat scratchy and sore.
Finally, I'm home.  I took this picture from my deck.  The sun looked like a red ball of fire in the sky.
I tuned into the news when I got home, and later found out some horrifying news.  As I was making my commute home, hundreds of people were loosing their homes to this devastating fire (I have seen pictures of neighborhoods burning, but chose not to show them here...they are just too depressing). The winds shifted (as they often do), and we experienced sustained 60+mph winds for the better part of an hour.  The Waldo Canyon fire had turned into a "firestorm of epic proportions" right before the eyes of everyone tuned into watching the afternoon news briefing about the fire.  I was glued to the media for the next several hours, as I watched my city go up in flames.

Here's a progression map of the fire from the day it started on Saturday (June 23), to the devastation that occurred on Tuesday evening (June 26).  The fire had tripled in size in less than 24 hours, with up to 32,000 people evacuated from their homes.

Star Spangled Layout

I hosted an All Day Crop last week, and I always provide a project for them (not that they don't have enough to work on! LOL) to create during the crop.  This time, it was a 2 page layout just in time for July 4th celebrations!
The layout design is Monologue (pg.52-53) from Imagine.  I used SuperHero paper and the American Celebration stamp set.  I love how patriotic it looks!

Now all they have to do is take pictures and put them on their layout, and their memories will last a lifetime!

Scraps to Cards

Each month I host a training session for our group of consultants, and we always have a creative project of some sort.  I have delegated the creative projects to Vicki Price (check out her blog), and she has never let us down.  This month, our assignment was to bring 2 standard card bases (in Colonial White and White Daisy), 6 stamp sets of our choice (including sentiments), and 4 stamp pads (Black, Cocoa, Desert Sand, Chocolate).  I couldn't imagine what our project was going to entail.

Vicki brought each of us, a series of scraps...all the same, for each person participating.  I wish I would have taken a picture of the pieces we had to work with...I wasn't thinking clearly...as the assignment was given to us.  I was freaking out...I'm a planner, not a fly by the seat of my pants kind of gal! LOL

Our assignment - we had 30-45 minutes to design a card, using ALL the pieces in our "scrap" kit and the stamps and inks we brought.  No cheating!  We weren't allowed to look at our neighbors designs.  She almost made us turn with our backs to each other so we wouldn't cheat.  You see, when Vicki makes a project, we have lots of "followers" on our team (yes, we have some rebels too...you know who you are! LOL), that copy EXACTLY what Vicki is teaching.  This time, she didn't even create a card...we were truly left to our own imaginations!  Yikes!  We didn't even have our trusty card confidence programs to follow.

So here was my first design:
Not bad, eh?  I was given scraps from the Florentine & Footloose paper packs, a few cricut images, buttons, waxy flax and some retired ribbon (we all have some...use it up!).  For this particular card, I chose to use the Enjoy Life stamp set.  It was one I happen to bring with me...I hadn't used it in awhile!

Here's what everyone else created:

Then came our second "scrap" kit.  Same rules applied...this time it was scraps from Wings & Sweetheart (retired) paper packs, along with cricut shapes, buttons, waxy flax and a button brad.  Here's my creation, using the Love Life stamp set:
And the group created these:
Not a like one in the bunch!  It was so fun to see what everyone created...you can definitely see the different creative styles we have in our group.  I've never seen our group so quiet and focused as we created our cards! As much as this project stressed me out at first, it was fun to think outside of the box, and on a whim.  Thanks again for the challenge (aka - torture), Vicki!

I challenge you to try this with the scraps you have...Go Green, use them up!  Turn your trash into a treasure.

June Workshop on the Go: VICTORY

During the month of June, I've selected VICTORY to be the workshop of the month, view my calendar for dates and times.  The layouts and cards use earth tones, so they are perfect for the guys in your life!  Use the pages for your Father's Day celebration, and the cards for a small gift!

Using the Victory WOTG kit, you can create both of these layouts:
Layout #1 - Instructional Brochure Layout
Layout #2 - Magic, Top Hat (I'm missing a picture on the right page)

I always find masculine cards to be a challenge to create, and by adding the Evergreen Cork Shapes to your order, you can create these 5 cards in addition to the 2 layouts.

The Workshop-on-the-Go kits are an amazing value...for just $29.95, the Victory WOTG kit includes a My Reflections Victory Paper Packet ($9.95 value), an exclusive Victory Workshop stamp set ($13.95 value), a package of Durable Square Studs ($3.95 value), a package of Natural Hemp ($2.25 value), and 2 sheets 12x12 Colonial White Cardstock and Instructional Brochure.
